2016 4th Annual NYC Soccer Gala


QUEENS, N.Y. - A capacity crowd of soccer supporters attended the fourth annual NYC Soccer Gala on March 3 at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan. Longtime soccer broadcaster Shep Messing emceed the event, which was co-hosted by St. John's, Columbia, Fordham, LIU Brooklyn and St. Francis Brooklyn.

A platform for those from all levels of the sport to come together and celebrate the rich history of New York City soccer, the Gala annually honors the contributions of some of the biggest names in the sport and also recognizes honorees from each of the host schools.

"The continued growth of the Gala has been exciting for all of the schools involved," said St. John's head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "It is a privilege each year to be able to recognize those that have contributed to the game and served as an inspiration to so many."

Alfonso Mondelo, MLS Technical Director, Competition, and New York Red Bulls Director of Youth Programs Robert Montgomery were recognized at the fourth edition of the event.Peter DiMaggio (Columbia), Tom Duffy (St. John's), Alber Hot (St. Francis Brooklyn),Giovanni Savarese (LIU Brooklyn), and John Wolyniec (Fordham) were the University honorees, while Michael DiMaggio was presented with the Award of Courage.

A four-year letterwinner at St. John's from 1983-86, Duffy served as a team captain as a senior and finished a 64-game career with 50 points on 16 goals and 18 assists. As a senior, Duffy tied for the team-lead in goals (5) and led the team in both assists (6) and points (18).

Duffy graduated in 1987 with a degree in accounting and currently works as a Producer/Partner at Charter Oak Insurance and Financial Services. A member of the University's Loughlin Society since 2008, Duffy earned the Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award in 2012.
